2024 Funding

Witney Talking News is staffed entirely by volunteers and relies on donations and grants to keep our service running. Last year we received funding from Witney Rotary Club and the Brian Crawford Trust, which enabled us to continue our service to you by covering such essentials as recording room hire and software updates. This year we are especially grateful to three organisations – the Lord Lieutenancy, the Lions Club of Witney and Thames Valley Police Community Fund. Together, they have contributed enough to maintain our services well into 2025 and beyond, and have covered the purchase of a set of new RNIB Accord USB Audio Readers.

Grant Awards News

We’ve had an amazing start to 2023 due to the kindness of four grant-awarding community funds.

Our first award came in early January from the Brian Crawford Trust, then in February we received a donation from the Bartlett Taylor Trust. In March came two grants in quick succession, one from the Witney Town Council and the second from Witney Town Charity.

WTN is staffed entirely by volunteers, and no charges are made for the service we provide; our income for the period 1 October 2021 to 30 September 2022 was just over £300 (mainly through gifts from our listeners), but our operating costs exceed £2500 annually.

Ways to Listen

USB Stick

Eligible listeners receive a weekly USB stick containing the latest edition through the post. These are sent and returned free of charge using the Royal Mail’s Articles for the Blind service. The stick can be played back on a dedicated simple to use playback unit provided free of charge. They can also be played back on some newer talking book machines or on your own computer.

Editions and magazines are supplied as a collection of tracks (one for each article or section). The playback unit allows you to skip forward and back a track at a time should you wish to skip an article or hear a section again.

COVID-19 Response

Following recent changes to government advice, we are now able to meet to recording at the High Street Methodist Church in Witney. This means that we will be able to record in better quality than we have been using the telephone, but more importantly, it means that we will be able to return to sending out USB sticks. Tonight (15th April 2021) we will meet at the Church to make the necessary preparations and the first “normal” edition will be 1860 – 22nd April 2021.

Social distancing arrangements still in place mean that we will still be restricted to just two readers for the time being.

As with all organisations, we will be keeping our activities under constant review as we monitor the risks to both listeners and volunteers, and we may need to amend our service again if the guidance changes. If we do have to remove our USB service, you will still be able to listen by telephoning 01993 555 986. Calls from our catchment area to that number are charged the same as a local call. In case we need to revert to the telephone option at short notice, we will be keeping it running for the foreseeable future.

How we use your money

It costs around £1 per week per listener to run the Witney Talking News and we raise every penny of that through donations, we receive no regular income from any other source.

As an organisation run entirely by volunteers our major costs are room rental, equipment and publicity and your donation will go directly to that work.

We use PayPal to process payments (see below) and they take a small fee, but after that fee 100% of what we receive will be spent on providing this vital service for Visually Impaired Persons in West Oxfordshire.

WITNEY TALKING NEWS TEAM CELEBRATES 40 YEARS ANNIVERSARY AND THEIR ORIGINAL FOUNDER IS THE CURRENT CHAIRMAN

Each week thousands of people read the Witney Gazette – but there are many West Oxfordshire residents who can’t because they suffer from loss of eyesight.

So each week a team of committed volunteers meets up in the Witney Methodist Church to record a one-hour programme drawn largely from the current Witney Gazette of news and items of interest. Also included are articles from the Faringdon Folly and Chipping Norton News, reports on local sport, a short quiz, Notice Board, the Editor’s choice of article and a short Reflections item. They also produce two special audio magazines each year.

Recently we were privileged to be able to interview Gareth Davies and that interview appears on our 13th December edition.

Mr Davies, born in Wales but educated in Witney, is the only Welshman to be selected for the England squad for the Blind Rugby World Cup to be held in Japan in 2019.

We were sad to learn that Nigel Parker had died in October 2018. Nigel was one of our founder readers, and apart from a spell while living in Wales between 2009 – 2012, he was a regular, committed reader, and he is greatly missed.

Cokethorpe School

On Friday 16th November 2018, Witney Talking News Chairman Peter Brading, Secretary Peter Bee and Outside Recording Engineer Eric Imeson visited Cokethorpe School in Witney.

Peter Bee gave a short talk about WTN to the Junior School Assembly which was well received by both pupils and staff. Following the assembly Eric Imeson recorded three Cokethorpe pupils reading Christmas items for our edition on the 13th December.

Children and their parents at Cokethorpe have been raising money for Witney Talking News this autumn and presented a much appreciated cheque for £615.68. Our thanks go to all the children, parents and staff at Cokethorpe for their support.

Specialist VI Services

British Wireless for the Blind Fund (BWBF) provide a number of solutions specifically aimed at visually impaired people. Witney Talking News is available on their Bumblebee Smartphone and also in the BWBF Talking Newspaper app. The app is available for all modern Android and Apple phones. On all these services you can find Witney Talking News in the “South East” section.

Streaming Playlist Guide

Our streaming playlists give a very similar experience to listening on a memory stick in that they contain all the individual tracks and it is possible to skip forward and back between tracks in the same way. However there is limited availability – it is only possible to listen to the latest 6 editions or the latest 1 magazine at any given time.

They can be used with a variety of software such as Windows Media Player, VLC Media Player, iTunes and many others. Most computers come with Windows Media Player installed (or iTunes if an Apple product) and on an Android phone or tablet then VLC can be installed from the app store, on a iPhone or iPad iTunes is installed by default. There are many others available also.

On Tuesday, 20th September 2016, the committee held a coffee morning at our Chairman’s house to say goodbye to Jane Holmes. Jane has been a volunteer for WTN for over 30 years, and has been involved in every aspect of our activities, including Chair, reading and editing. She was also Editor-in-Chief of our magazines for some years, and was responsible for producing many superb editions.

As a small charity funded entirely by donations, WTN relies solely on our dedicated band of volunteers for 100% of its activity.

There are a number of areas in which volunteers work:

Reading the news

The most public role, four volunteers (2 male and 2 female) give around one hour on a Thursday night to be the voice of the news. These are drawn from a pool of readers and each reads approximately once a month.

It costs around £50 per week to produce Witney Talking News. We receive no official funding or support from any public body and so rely fully on the generous gift of time by our volunteers as well as donations from listeners, members of the public an other charitable organisations.

Witney Talking News (WTN) is a free weekly talking news service providing audio local news for people living in West Oxfordshire who are visually impaired or who otherwise have difficulty holding and reading newspapers.

The chair leads a small committee and a volunteer pool of around 50 people with a variety of skills. It takes around 11 people to make each recording, and we record in the Methodist Church on the High Street in Witney each Thursday except at Easter and Christmas.

Who are we?

A registered charity based in Witney in West Oxfordshire, Witney Talking News (WTN) provides a free weekly talking news service to local people who are visually impaired or who otherwise have difficulty holding or reading newspapers. Editions are posted free-of-charge courtesy of a FREE delivery service from the Royal Mail so listeners do not incur costs either for receiving the service or returning the pouch.

OCVA Awards

On the 11th May 2016 our chairman and secretary were at the Town Hall in Oxford attending the Oxfordshire Community and Voluntary Action (OCVA) Awards ceremony.

Their presence was because Witney Talking News was shortlisted in the “Lifetime Achievement” category!

There was some very stiff competition in all categories and some very worthy causes represented and many dedicated volunteers too. Whilst we didn’t win, we are very proud to have been shortlisted in that category. It is testament to the very hard work of our volunteers that the voluntary sector in Oxfordshire should consider our achievement alongside some of the very large charities represented there.

35th Anniversary

On the 29th March 2014, Witney Talking News marked 35 years of recording local news for visually impaired people in West Oxfordshire.

Three readers sit ready to record the news flanked on the left by a recording technician and on the right by a listener and his guide dog. In the background a metallic purple helium balloon in the shape of a 35.

The event was marked by a special magazine edition and articles in the Witney Gazette and Oxford Mail. A lot changed in 35 years as can be seen from the photo below of a recording session in 1979 when WTN was first founded.

Donation from Waitrose

WTN Chairman, Peter Brading, receives a cheque from Waitrose Witney after WTN was chosen to be a Waitrose Community Matters beneficiary.

In its 35th year of recording, 2014, Witney Talking News was selected to be part of the Waitrose Community Matters scheme in their Witney store.

As a result, a cheque was received for the sum of £267.

From time to time we arrange social events to allow our volunteers and listeners to meet each other. In July 2013 we were honoured to play host to Lord Hurd of Westwell (former government Minister and Witney MP) as our guest speaker who fitted us in around a busy schedule of the launch of his latest book on Disraeli which he signed for many people at the event.
